Bolingey v The Borough

Bolingey Barbarians were honoured to be invited to Penryn RFC, celebrating 150 years of rugby at the Borough.

A large crowd enjoyed a great match played in bright spring sunshine.

The Referees’ Society was well represented. President, Gary Vaughan and Chairman, Glyn Barnicoat in attendance to support referee and Secretary, Terry Mortimore officiating in his last game before hanging up his whistle.

Both sides had large squads eager to participate on this anniversary occasion. As always played in great spirit with a final score of 32-7 to Penryn.

The ‘third half’ lived up to expectation, a big thank you to the catering and bar staff who put in a great shift to keep everyone fed and watered.

Bolingey Barbarians love a good sing along and joined in with ‘The Oggymen’, Cornish Folk Singers, from Falmouth. The Padstow boys provided musical accompaniment to the tight harmonies of many a favourite Cornish anthem.

Bolingey presented Penryn Chairman, Matthew Gray an anniversary plaque which was handmade by wood carver, Roger Gluyas of Probus.

The Barbarians were also honoured to receive the ‘Tommy May’ trophy by the Cornwall Referees’ Society. This is a new award in recognition of sportsmanship and was presented by President, Gary Vaughan.

The Bolingey Barbarian’s charitable endeavours were supported by hosts, Penryn RFC. Many players from this club are also Barbarians. Together with a raffle, auction, ground collection, commemorative pin badges and the generous donations of many kind individuals of the rugby family. A total of over £2,000 was raised on the day.

Bolingey Barbarian’s Chairman Roger Mead gave an address of thanks to all friends and supporters on behalf of the charities we hope to help now and in the future. The latest recipients being TALKmoreCORNWALL CIC, providing child-facing activities across Cornwall, such as story time and singing to enable children who need language support, and their families, to engage with literacy and language-developing activities at a suitable level for their ability, as well as Makaton Signing for babies (and pre-schoolers) across Cornwall to support families with communication difficulties.
